Coops and Interns Have Cubicles Too!

I just started my summer job today, and one of the first things I did upon arriving was to get set up in my new cubicle. One of the cooler things about having a cube for the summer after having been a commuter student all year long is having a pseudo-permanent space that I can leave stuff in and not have to haul everything I need for the day on my back (after having developed some minor back issues).

Having that dedicated space that is yours is great and after having done it a few times, I’ve got a few tips that are great for all cube-dwellers and especially cash strapped college students on an internship:

  • Put food in that spare filing cabinet (seriously, how much paperwork are you going to get in a three month internship?)
  • Take time to arrange everything in your space just the way you like it (you spend a good chunk of your waking hours here, might as well make it comfortable) whether that means tweaking your browser, wallpaper, arranging and straightening out your desk
  • Working in a big office? There is probably a supply cabinet or admin that you can talk to about getting pens/notebooks/other miscellaneous office supplies (awesome if you have an office supply fetish)
  • Here’s another bigger company thing: Check out what kinds of corporate discounts you are eligible for – everything from your own products/services, cell phones/plans, local eateries, partner products/services, etc (gyms are another good one, some companies will have discounts on local gyms or even offer their own gym!)

More on the food one:

Vending machines are expensive and full of all kinds of bad food, stay far away from them, whether for health reasons or for financial reasons. Also, something to consider is taking up the many small meals plan; having the dedicated space for yourself is great for that and you can stock food there. In the past I have had easy stuff like tea, oatmeal, granola bars, nuts or yogurt raisins in my desk, stashed for munching during the day and preventing vending machine runs.
