Extend the Life of Your Cheap Office Chair
I spend a lot of time at my desk, whether I am on the computer, doing homework, etc, it’s all there. When I’m there, I have an office chair from Office Depot/Max. It is pretty comfy and in decent shape for its age (3-4 years old), but the cushioning on the bottom is starting to go out and the “leather” is wearing down in
places.
If I wanted to, I could have gone out and bought a new/better/fancier chair, or with twenty minutes and a little bit of patience, I gave it more oomph. Here is what I did:
- Remove the caps and four screws from where the armrests attach to the base of the chair with an Allen wrench, then the back of the chair, with the armrests should come off.
- Flip the base upside down so you can see the zipper that goes around the front half of the chair.
- Unzip it all the way and pull back the cover.
- On my chair, there are three sections (left, right, center) - I cut three pieces of egg crate-type foam and shoved each piece into each part of the chair.
- Zip everything up (you may have to get some help compressing the foam while you do this) and put the screws back on.
The chair may look a little funny and lumpy when you first put it back together, but it’ll work itself out after you sit in it for a bit. Then you will have extended the life of your office chair with stuff from around the home!
