It’s been one of those weeks, but thankfully it is Friday! I would have had this post up earlier, as usual, but I hadn’t written it yet. Some interesting articles to read, give them a look and let me know what you think in the comments.
- Career Lessons from Eliot Spitzer’s Call Girl, Ashley Dupre Penelope Trunk
Didn’t think there was a lesson in that whole story?1. Invest money in your career.
So, Ashley goes to New York with basically no money, and the first big money she makes, what does she do with it? Breast implants! How smart of her! The implants cost about $3000, but after that, she can make $4000 an hour from guys like Spitzer. She made back her investment in an hour, everything else is profit.
- Reznor vs. Radiohead: Innovation Showdown Wired
Cool article talking about how they have each tweaked with how things are done in the music industry - I have to go with Nine Inch Nails on this one; Reznor is a real techie and has his priorities in line. The two bands have also been busy one-upping each other with their innovative promotion strategies. We were tempted to let the groups coexist peacefully at the forward edge of digital distribution until Nine Inch Nails’ Trent Reznor accused Radiohead of betraying fans by selling them low-quality files.
- Lost forever: the “stability” of that job you had Exponential Entrepreneurship
Fellow Austinite, Kevin Koym, has an article discussing some of the fallout from a big round of layoffs at Dell earlier this week. He makes a very strong argument for changing the way we think about our jobs and careers and why more people need to take on entrepreneurial pursuits. When a former employer looks at cutting your job as an opportunity, it is time to change your outlook on the idea of a job.
What needs to happen is we, the Austin community, need to start working together at a level that we have not done before- and fight the recession that we are in head on.
Have a great weekend!
