How I Get Things Done
Remember the Milk. Plain and simple. For a while, I was using a moleskine-based system, but that just got to be too cumbersome for the nature of my workload. As a student, the work that I am doing is, for the most part, repetitive and RTM’s ability to do recurring tasks is fantastic for that.
Getting Set Up
After receiving all of my syllabi at the beginning of the semester, I would go through and crank through all of the different assignments:
- Create a task in RTM for each regular assignment (weekly reading, problem set, whatever)
- Set the first due date of the assignment
- Set a recurrence (example: weekly until the last day of class)
That’s 90% of the work right there! After doing that, whenever you go onto RTM, you’ll see the assignments that you need to do, right there.
Media List
In addition to tracking tasks, I have a list of books and music that I want to keep my eyes open for. In my old system, I had a separate section of my notebook that was for tracking this, now I’ll show you how I use RTM for tracking wishlists and keeping them separate from task lists.
- Create a separate list (I called mine Media)
- Start adding media in there (If it is something that is not yet out, put a due date on it so you can see when it does come out)
- Depending on how you view/sort your tasks, you will now have media mixed in with your regular tasks. To keep them separate, I created a Smart List that filters items from the Media list out:
- Perform a search like this:
NOT list:media - Go to the Save tab on the right sidebar and save this search
- Perform a search like this:
Accessing Remember the Milk
You have a lot of options for accessing RTM, here is their page on all of the different ways to do it.
For me, the most convenient ways to access RTM is through GMail and the mobile web version of RTM.
