Brazen Careerist Launch!
Congratulations to the bunch over at Brazen Careerist on launching their new site for members of Generation Y! It’s a site with a collection of GenY bloggers as they write about entering the professional world and working on their/our terms, working differently from any other generation before us. I have been having a great time reading through their blogs, and I think anyone in school right now would be doing themselves a disservice to not flip through this. Reading stuff from these folks will definitely be food for thought. Think about what you want to do with yourself after you get out of school, or even going forward from this point if you are already out.
For me, I don’t want to work for The Man, slaving away in a 9 to 5, I want to do stuff that is interesting and challenging, taking me beyond my training in school as an engineer; I want what I do to have meaning to myself and those around me, meaning beyond a paycheck and retirement.
Again, go through and read some of the stories there and think about what you want - you don’t have to follow the same trail that your parents did.
Here are some of the cool posts that I’ve checked out there so far:
- Twitter 101 (Meg Roberts)
She’s a student at USF and she is writing about entering the Twitterverse and has done her research. I’m following her on Twitter - you should too! - To Lead Gen Y, Lead As Equals (Brad Fults)
I’ve seen this to a certain degree, and I can say that I personally, respond well to the type of leadership that Brad talks about here. I want to be led by someone that will engage me and make me accountable for my results, not how busy I look from 9 to 5.It may be the case that the previous generation of workers was disillusioned and cynical enough to accept a top-down leadership through tyranny, but the ?Generation Y? workers in their twenties today don?t have the same roots or opinions.
- My Gen Y Life (Melanie Lopez)
Came across her blog from Brazen Careerist, she’s another young professional talking about life and work as a member of Generation Y, with everything from interviewing tips, weird office stories to how to survive working in the “real world”.
