Facebook Updating Profile Design/Layout

In the Facebook is the anti-Myspace department, Facebook is cleaning up their act. They are working on updating the profile page to an even cleaner layout than what they have right now. Facebook apps are cluttering up profiles at a startingly rapid rate, but thanks to this update, things should be easier to find and read. Kudos to them for keeping usability in mind; don’t get me wrong, customization should be allowed, but if certain basic information on your profile could be anywhere, then we have a problem. For example, if I want to find your wall, I don’t want to have to scroll through several screenfuls of zombies, ninjas, and vampires.

Anyway, I really like what I have seen so far, here are some screenshots:

I think the best way to think about this design is that it breaks your Facebook profile up into three sections (by default):

  • Wall - Direct access to all of your activity (on the web or even just Facebook)
  • About - One-stop-shop for directory and basic profile information
  • Photos - The photo application (and other applications) can inhabit this peripheral page

Anyone want to take bets on how many people will complain and say that they will leave Facebook forever unless Mark Zuckerberg blesses their profile and returns Facebook to the way it was in 2005?
