Essential Mobile Websites and Services: Part 1

A little bit more than a week ago, I did a roundup of the essential applications that I use on my Java-enabled cell phone, now I am going to do a follow-up to that one with a list of essential mobile websites and services. Today, I am going to cover information stores and the next installment will go over web-services.

  • Google Reader greader
I am already a heavy user of the full version of GReader, so the mobile version was a natural choice. When you first visit the site (after logging in, if you have not already) you are presented by default the first 10 items from your reading list. Full GReader will allow you to set the default tag that? you view when you launch, but the mobile version does not allow for that, so it pulls from your “All Items” view.
Mobile GReader allows for starring just like the full version, I use that as a quick way to tag stuff for me to come back to later when I am back at a computer. Outside of the main interface, GReader’s biggest weakness is one that it (and any other feed reader) shares, when sites don’t share the full feed, you have to jump out of your reader and into a website that may not mobilize very well.
  • Google News? gnews
The mobile version of their infamous news site is fast, readable and attractive. A lot of the news sites it links to are fairly mobile friendly, making a fast and user friendly experience.I like it for the same reasons I like the full version: it is a fast, readable and uncluttered way to get a snapshot of what is happening in the news, right now.
  • Yelp
Access this site’s great user-generated reviews of everything from restaurants to veterinarians, while you are out on the go.
  • Facebook Mobile
Again, this has the information store factor going on, having access to your facebook account when you are away is handy if for no other reason than to find someone’s phone number without calling and asking around for it. And if you feel the need to facebook poke someone while you are on the bus, that is an option (how did we ever get by without this?).

Stay tuned for the second installment of this look at mobile websites and services.
