Widen Your Blogging Horizon

We were talking today in my Government class (The United States and Regime Change) about being careful where you get your historical information from.? A pair of the readings we did in the past week presented two different views of American interventions and subsequent attempts to build democracies in the world during the 20th century, one was decidedly less optimistic than the other.

With that in mind, I started thinking about how to widen perspectives on the world and diversification of information sources. If all of the news and information that you consume come from the same background or environment (ex. big American news media), you’re not really getting a “fair and balanced” view of the world (whether or not that is intentional is another post all together).

We need to seek out perspectives from people in other places and situations, and not just the filtered stories, but real stories from real people in the middle of everything.

I did some poking around and came across a couple of interesting blogs written by Iraqis in and around Iraq - not propaganda, but real stories, by people that could easily be someone in my place, but the Middle East.

  • Iraqi Konfused Kid - news and articles about the absurdity of living by an Iraqi former heavy-metal guitarist in a no particular place to go heavy metal band
This guy is a 22 year old Computer Engineer (like yours truly) in Amman, Jordan.
  • It is all about our life - I am an Iraqi female who lives in one of the Iraqi cities…I love to speak my mind, at the beginning I didn’t agree with the idea of blogging because I am not a writer but I found later it is such a good way to vent… So let me say: welcome to my blog.
I came across her blog by a link to her post about snow in Baghdad.

It looks like the Iraqi blogging community is fairly well linked out, so I will explore those in the future, maybe there will be more interesting stories to hear in the future.
