Electronic Existence Independent of Physical Location

Over the last several months, I have been working on moving my online experience completely online (and not a mixed experience that varies from location-to-location), so that I can operate independent of where I am geographically, how I am connected to the internet, and from what device. This need stems from several causes:

  • I had a large computer failure several months ago, and I was unable to access my data (e-mail, documents, etc) for a while
  • I spend a great deal of time on campus or around it, where it is easy for me to get to a computer lab, and I do not want to haul my laptop with me
  • I just got a cell phone with internet access, allowing me (limited) mobile access

I started by gradually moving my e-mail away from my Thunderbird/desktop e-mail solution (where I would use LogMeIn to check remotely in the past - very inefficient) to a GMail-based solution, where it was retrieving my e-mail via POP3, before eventually going to forwarding directly to GMail. I will write a more in-depth article about how to make that transition, including how to move old e-mail out to GMail.

This article on Web Worker Daily expresses some of the concerns that I have with this model - particularly stability and accessibility. I have tweaked around with backing up some of this stuff, but I am still working on standardizing all of it. Stay tuned as I write about my experiences moving into the cloud.
