Howto Fix Thunder Bolt CF CardReader

I started having problems with my card reader a couple of months ago, where it would no longer be recognized as an actual drive - instead it was being recognized by Windows as a VX7012 (some sort of “Advanced USB Video Capture” device). Here is what I did in Windows Vista (XP instructions are basically the same thing) in order to get it working again:

  1. Download this driver pack from SmartDisk. (See their Knowledge Base article 1192)
  2. Extract the zip file somewhere on your PC
  3. Open Computer Management (Right-click My Computer -> Manage or Run -> compmgmt.msc)
  4. Device Manager will be one of the icons on the left
  5. Find the VX7012 device and right-click-> Update Driver Software)
  6. Click Browse My Computer for driver software
  7. Go to where the driver pack was extracted, then into Thunderbolt Drivers\WinXP
  8. Click Next and Windows will do its voodoo and you will be all set up.
